Connecting with Community

PASSION TOURS

Taking students on a tour of Boise to connect with members of our community who are living out their passion was an invaluable highlight of The Passion Project.

As we progressed on the tour, we reflected on each presentation we saw by thinking about the following questions:

  • How did the presenter’s passion begin?
  • What age were they?
  • Who influenced them?
  • Was their passion always easy? Why do you think so?
  • What problems have they had to deal with?
  • What do you believe is the main reason the presenter continues to enjoy his or her passion?
  • What are some related local and global issues and concepts? Things people are worried about, a matter for discussion, a public problem...
  • What elements of the presentation do you think were effective?
  • What ideas did you get that you could use in your presentations?

We use the word presentation to refer to the sharing of information.  It does not mean that each person we visit will have a slideshow or poster board to show us.  We are looking at all the elements of presenting what you know to an audience and hope to gather tips on the tour for what makes for an effective presentation.

As we toured, we recorded our thoughts about each presenter using The Golden Circle PDF (See Resources) so that we could get an understanding of what they did, how they did it, and ultimately, why they were pursuing their passion.  This was invaluable when we got back to school and got on with the work of figuring out our own 'why'.
